Various EU Airlines Stymied by Labor ‘Uprising’
2010-02-24
Whilst LH pilots agreed to suspend the strike in favor of further talks until March 8, five unions representing French air traffic controllers have called for a strike beginning today. The five-day strike, from 23-27 February, is in protest over plans to implement a single European air traffic control system that six countries, including France, signed up to in November 2008. The unions claimed the project would lead to the dismantling of the French civil aviation authority and threaten the jobs of its 12,000 staff.
The unions are also taking a stand against government plans to make significant cuts in staffing levels in 2010 and 2011. British Airways, meanwhile, is faced with a renewed threat by cabin crew to strike as most ‘Unite’ union members voted in favor of a strike. The union will study the vote this Thursday before picking a strike date.
Fears of job security underlie all the airline work actions.
